Modern SEO Audit
Checklist for 2026

The full checklist used during paid client audits. Run it on your own site, identify the gaps, prioritize what matters.

By Ravindra Singh · 12 min read · Updated April 2026

Old SEO audit checklists are missing half of what now matters. They cover speed, schema, backlinks, and meta tags — and stop. The brands winning organic visibility in 2026 are doing all of that plus a layer of AI search readiness most checklists ignore entirely.

This is the actual checklist used during paid client audits. Use it to self-diagnose your site. Where you can't fix something, that's where consulting help becomes useful.

1. Technical foundations

The non-negotiable baseline. If any of these are broken, nothing else compounds.

  • Mobile Core Web Vitals — LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1
  • Sitemap.xml present, submitted, and consistent with actual indexed URLs
  • Robots.txt configured correctly (no accidental blocks of GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended)
  • Canonical tags present, correct, and not pointing to broken URLs
  • No redirect chains longer than 1 hop
  • No mixed HTTP/HTTPS content issues
  • Indexable URLs aligned with intended ranking targets (no accidental noindex)
  • Hreflang configured correctly if multi-country

2. Schema & structured data

  • Organization schema on homepage with sameAs links to verified profiles
  • Product/Service schema where applicable, validated and complete
  • FAQPage schema on relevant pages (informational, evaluation-stage)
  • HowTo schema on instructional content
  • Article schema with author, datePublished, dateModified on blog content
  • BreadcrumbList schema across navigational paths
  • All schema validates in Google's Rich Results Test without errors

3. Content depth & quality

  • Each priority page genuinely answers the query better than top-ranking competitors
  • No thin content (under 300 words) on pages targeting commercial queries
  • Topical clusters built (pillar pages with supporting content)
  • Original research, frameworks, or distinctive perspectives — not regurgitated competitor content
  • Author byline with verifiable credentials on every content page
  • Last-updated dates visible and refreshed regularly
  • No duplicate content across multiple URLs
  • Manufacturer/supplier copy replaced with original descriptions on ecommerce

4. On-page SEO

  • Title tags unique per page, under 60 characters, leading with primary keyword
  • Meta descriptions unique, under 160 characters, conversion-oriented
  • H1 unique per page and matches primary query intent
  • H2/H3 hierarchy logical, no skipped levels, no decorative use
  • Internal links use descriptive anchor text, not "click here"
  • Images have descriptive alt text and proper sizing
  • Internal linking architecture follows hub-and-spoke topical structure

5. Entity & authority signals

  • Wikidata entry exists for your brand with verifiable claims
  • Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across the web
  • Google Business Profile fully optimized (if local-relevant)
  • Brand mentioned across trusted industry publications
  • Author/founder profiles on LinkedIn, Twitter/X, industry directories
  • Backlink profile clean (no toxic or paid-link signals)
  • Reviews flowing consistently to Google Business Profile and category-relevant platforms

6. AI search readiness (often skipped)

  • AI bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) can crawl your site
  • Brand appears in ChatGPT/Perplexity/Gemini for "best [category]" type queries
  • Comparison tables, structured definitions, FAQ blocks present on key pages
  • Featured snippet wins tracked for priority queries
  • Google AI Overview citations sampled and tracked monthly
  • Voice search queries optimized for conversational phrasing
  • SpeakableSpecification schema on speakable content (where applicable)

7. Conversion & CRO

  • CTAs visible above the fold on all priority pages
  • Trust signals (reviews, certifications, results) prominently displayed
  • Forms minimal-friction (only essential fields)
  • Mobile checkout/enquiry flow tested and frictionless
  • Page conversion rate tracked, not just traffic

8. Tracking & reporting

  • Google Search Console set up correctly with all properties
  • Google Analytics 4 configured with proper conversion events
  • Rank tracking for priority keywords with weekly cadence
  • AI search citation tracking for priority queries
  • Monthly reporting that ties SEO metrics to business outcomes

How to use this list

Don't try to fix everything at once. Run through the list, mark each item green/yellow/red, then prioritize based on:

  • Items in the technical foundations section get fixed first
  • Items affecting indexation, rendering, and core CWV are higher priority than refinements
  • AI search readiness items become higher priority if competitors are getting cited and you're not
  • Save the long-tail content audit for after foundations are solid
